Sự đổi mới

Innovation partnerships

iRAP brings together teams which share a common interest in saving lives through safer roads and safer journeys. Our global partnerships with governments, mobility clubs, industry and research groups ensure innovative ideas from one programme partner can be shared immediately with others for mutual benefit.

Innovation projects

A methodology which enables iRAP Star Rating assessments and associated fatality and serious injury estimates to be completed with a reduced number of attributes. Light Star Rating will make iRAP Star Ratings more affordable, efficient and open up opportunities to utilise technologies which can auto-detect and code road attributes for iRAP assessments.

Ai-RAP is the ‘accelerated and intelligent’ capture of Star Rating road survey and coding data using artificial intelligence, machine learning, vision systems, LIDAR, telematics, road asset data and other data sources. Big data and artificial intelligence can play a lead role in building the social and economic business case for safer roads and create the scale of change needed to save millions of lives.

iRAP Urban refers to a range of models and tools designed to help municipalities design safer urban road networks for all road users.

Infrastructure Star Ratings for the self-driving car will measure how well road infrastructure design supports the driver assistance technologies and increasing levels of autonomous vehicles.

The Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) Global App is the first ever systematic evidence-based approach for analysing the risk of roads around schools. This easy-to-use universal application is a low-cost way to support quick interventions that start saving lives and preventing serious injuries.

iRAP models recognise the important role of speed in understanding the safety of a road. Vehicle speeds play a major role in the likelihood of a crash and in the severity of a crash. The iRAP model and tools could be enhanced to enable the setting of speed limit and enforcement policy.

The Star Rating for Designs (SR4D) web app enables Star Ratings to be easily incorporated into the road design process. The app empowers designers to assess the safety of a road design and improve its Star Rating before the road is constructed, thus saving lives and preventing serious injury.

Road trauma is a preventable public health crisis which is predicted to cost USD $24 trillion in the next decade. However, investment does not match the scale of the crisis. Only $1-3 invested in road trauma prevention for every $100 of costs. Social impact investing provides an exciting option to ‘unlock’ the benefits of improving road safety by proving concepts, prioritising data collection, facilitating multi-stakeholder approaches, and laying the foundations for larger scale commercial structures.

The aim of this partnership is to develop a Safe System Star Rating module in iRAP’s online software VIDA to produce a clear and consistent approach for ‘zero harm’ by a target date.

Star Ratings are an effective tool for communicating the level of safety which is ‘built-in’ to the road for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians to the general public. The introduction of Decimal Star Rating will enable a greater level of resolution in the assessment of the level of safety built into a road section.

As high-speed roads are upgraded to provide better protection to counter head-on and run-off crashes, shunt collisions (where one vehicle impacts with the rear-end of another vehicle) make up a greater proportion of total crashes. Introducing a shunt crash type into the iRAP model would improve prediction of shunt crashes, and reduce them using infrastructure and road management features.

The iRAP Demonstrator is an interactive tool which enables road safety stakeholders to explore the relationship between road design elements and speed to ensure 3-star or better safety. The tool is available at demonstrator.vida.irap.org/

The use of a range of ITS solutions, such as ramp metering, incident detection, weather monitoring, variable speed limits and so on, are helping to reduce crash rates on high-standard expressways and motorways. A “Smart Motorway” or “ITS” model enhancements would expand the range of safety treatments to include ITS and related technologies.

iRAP is working on a number of Global Analytics applications, including our data analysis tool, Vắc xin cho đường which contains over 400 million data points across low-, middle-, and high-income countries. This interactive tool shows how roads rate in terms of safety and outlines the road features that matter.
