The 12 Global Road Safety Performance Targets were oficially launched by the United Nations General Assembly in the latest UN Resolution on Road Safety in 2018. The targets include ensuring all new roads are built to a 3-star or better standard for all road users (Goal 3), and more than 75% of travel is on the equivalent of 3-star or better roads for all road users by 2030 (Goal 4).
Star Rating for Designs (SR4D) offers an evidence-based, standardised process for assessing the safety of road designs.
With SR4D, you can:
- Assess the safety of designs for all classes of roads in urban and rural contexts.
- Generate safety Star Ratings for all road user types.
- Estimate numbers of fatalities and serious injuries likely to occur with the designs.
- Create safety investment plans and economic analyses.
- Demonstrate compliance with UN Global Road Safety Performance Target 3.
iRAP recommends a 6-stage plan for organisations that want to build SR4D capability.
- Join an inception meeting, to meet key iRAP team members and see of how SR4D was developed and how it’s used.
- Take the Star Rating Essentials (SRE) online course (5 x 1-hour modules plus assignments). Participants will learn about the iRAP methodology and learn how to use the iRAP software platform, ViDA.
- Take the SR4D online course (4 x 1-hour modules plus assignments). Participants learn how to use the SR4D web application to assess designs.
- Obtain iRAP interim accreditation, by passing the accreditation tests, to join a community of experts that can perform iRAP-specification activities to the same consistently high level of quality worldwide.
- Use SR4D in design projects. iRAP key staff offer remote technical support at this stage, including online technical advice and case study workshops.
- Obtain full iRAP accreditation, by demonstrating successful completion of a project that uses Star Ratings and investment plans. Experts with iRAP accreditation:
- Are listed on the iRAP website, which is often referred to by organisations such as the World Bank.
- Agree to a globally consistent Code of Conduct.
- Have permission to use the iRAP Accredited logo.
- Get regular updates on the latest developments in iRAP methodology and specifications.
