Preventing Thousands of Deaths and Injuries in Uganda

A preliminary assessment of 760km of busy roads in Uganda identified opportunities to prevent more than 13,000 deaths and serious injuries over 20 years.
One of the key observations has been that almost the entire network caters of at least some pedestrian traffic and 1/3 caters for a high level of pedestrian movement. However, just 2% of the network has pedestrian footpaths in place. This finding takes particular importance when it is considered that some 15 pedestrians are killed or seriously injured in Uganda each day.
Consultations on the preliminary results are now taking place, and this will lead to the finalisation of a large scale plan of improvements. The iRAP Uganda project is being undertaken in partnership with Ministry of Works and Transport, Uganda National Road Authority and Tullow Uganda Operations.
