iRAP Prepares for the Decade of Action for Road Safety
As the United Nations prepares for its March 2010 meeting in New York, we look forward to a commitment to a Decade of Action for Road Safety. iRAP’s vision for the decade is a world free of high risk roads. With coordinated action to upgrade the worst 10% of the world’s roads, we can help save more than 1 000 000 deaths and serious injuries each year. The solutions are proven, the investment returns are high and it can be done!
Our regional programmes are growing rapidly, with more than 60 countries now actively using RAP. In 2010 alone, new projects are being planned or are underway in Mexico, Central America, Uganda, Egypt, India, Philippines, Korea, Bangladesh, Canada and Eastern Europe.
With such high demand comes the need for an industry capable of delivering and supporting iRAP projects within each country. This includes the survey, rating and assessment of roads, and the design and construction of safe new infrastructure for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists and vehicle occupants. We look forward to working with industry partners over the next 10 years to help make our vision a reality.
