iRAP Gets Underway in India

iRAP is helping to transform a stretch of National Highway 1 in India into the country's first ‘‘greener and safer'' highway corridor.
The project, which is funded by the World Bank and will be implemented by the National Highways Authority of India, aims to lift safety standards to equal with the best in the world for motorists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists.
Participants from leading road safety organisations including the Federation of Indian Automobile Associations and the Institute of Road Traffic Education, and toll road operator L&T Panipat Elevated Corridor, contributed to the project in the iRAP Opening Workshop in New Delhi.
A detailed survey of the corridor has been undertaken using state-of-the-art equipment provided by Chennai-based Indian Road Survey and Management.
The World Health Organisation reports that more than 100,000 people die in road crashes in India each year. Final results of the iRAP assessment are due in early 2010.
