Road deaths in developing countries
The challenge of dysfunctional roads

This paper explores the link between economic development, rising motorisation and road deaths. Dr John Mumford OBE finds that road deaths do not rise and fall inevitably with growing income, and examines the contribution that tackling dysfunctional roads can make.

Barriers to Change
Designing safe roads for motorcyclists

This paper shows that motorcycle crashes cost the European economy billions annually and argues that the response is not proportionate to the scale of the problem. It examines crash barriers that routinely save the lives of car occupants but that can cause traumatic injury to motorcyclists.

Getting Ahead:
Returning Britain to European Leadership in Road Casualty Reduction

This paper reviews the astonishing returns that are now being achieved by simple safe road design changes such as sheltered turning lanes, safety fencing and road markings to make roads self-explaining and forgiving. It shows that it is possible to save 10,000 deaths and serious injuries a year worth 0.5% of GDP through a national Safe Road Infrastructure Programme initiative alone.

Republic enemy:
How Ireland's road authorities are confronting bad road design

For the first time since 1986, the Republic of Ireland has moved below the average EU road death rate. Employing common sense engineering modifications, victory could now be within sight for the country's safety officials.
