Before and after study of motorway upgrading in Slovakia (2016)

Between 2014 and 2015, a wide-ranging package including improvements taken from an iRAP Safer Roads Investment Plan was implemented by the Slovak National Motorway Company on a 327km sample of motorways and expressways identified as having potential for improvement by the SENSoR project. The total cost was about EUR 40m. As a result of this work, an estimated 355 deaths and serious injuries will be prevented over the next 20 years. The percentage of the roads rating 3-star or better increased from 27-77%.

M12 corridor, Ukraine: paper accepted for 1st European Road Infrastructure Congress 2016

The attached paper has been accepted for the 1st European Road Infrastructure Congress, 18-20 October 2016, Leeds, United Kingdom: 'Development of a Safer Road Corridors Investment Plan in Ukraine: prioritisation on the M12 corridor and assessment of design plans.'

 
 
Ukraine M12 audit assessment of design plans

iRAP protocols prioritised 40km of the M12 in Ukraine for rehabilitation on the basis of future fatal and serious casualty reduction.  Estimates showed that more than 500 fatal and serious casualties could be reduced over 20 years and that the Benefit:Cost Ratio would be more than 5.  Design plans for this road section were assessed and are commented on here by TRL. 

 
 
Highlands Highway: iRAP Papua New Guinea Technical Report (2015)

This technical report describes the road assessment undertaken on the Highlands Highway in Papua New Guinea (PNG) utilising the data collected as part of the Visual Road Condition Survey providing reliable baseline data on the condition of PNG’s priority road network. This report includes details on data collection, describes the methodology used to create Star Ratings and Safer Road Investment Plans and also contains a summary of the results.

 
 
iRAP India Project Summary (2015)

This report summarises the results for roads in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh surveyed between 2010 and 2014. Most of the roads are rated just 1- or 2-stars for safety and its is estimated that 76,000 deaths and serious injuries occur on the roads each year at a cost of INR 182.2 billion (USD 2.8 billion).

Pilot Project: Ibarkska to Magistrala, Serbia (2014)

Produced by AMSS-Motor Vehicle Centre in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior-Traffic Police Administration and PE "Roads of Serbia", this report presents Star Ratings and Risk Maps for the the road IA-2 - Ibarska magistrala, from Belgrade (Zarkovo) to Cacak (Preljina).

This study involves the M12, M17 and M18, roads of national importance in Ukraine and also international transit routes.  This report is part of the global effort to reduce road deaths and aims to help Ukraine focus on priorities for the contribution of safer road infrastructure to 2020 for these roads.

iRAP Bangladesh Technical Report (2013)

As part of efforts to curb road deaths and serious injuries, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Bangladesh Roads and Highways Department (RHD) invited iRAP to assess roads that form the backbone of Bangladesh’s transport system.  

 
 
Best practices in road safety funding and infrastructure development: Learning from iRAP East Africa and the Nigeria pilot study

This paper reviews iRAP East Africa assessments and finds that at least 20% of fatalities and serious injuries could be avoided by simple infrastructure improvements, and at least half of these come from measures that cost less than $500 per life or serious injury saved.

 
 
Vaccines for Roads (2nd Edition)

iRAP is a global programme of local road safety champions leading RAP activities in more than 70 countries. Some half a million kilometres of roads have been assessed. This second edition of Vaccines for Roads describes that work, with a particular focus on results in low-income and middle-income countries.

India Four States Report (2012)

This project assisted the governments of four Indian states: Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat and Karnataka to assess road infrastructure-related risk on 3,000km of high-risk roads and identify economically viable road safety countermeasures for implementation under the World Bank financed upgrades.

 
 
Andhra Pradesh, India Demonstration Corridors Technical Report (2011)

In 2010, iRAP was invited by the World Bank Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF) to assist the Andhra Pradesh Road Development Corporation (RDC) in assessing the demonstration corridors and identifying remedial measures. 

 
 
iRAP India Phase 2: Kerala State Transport Project, Kasaragod to Kanjanghad

This report summarises the Star Rating results for the existing Kasaragod to Kanjanghad road (29.6km) in Kerala and compares those results with the Star Ratings produced from the proposed design.

Indonesia Demonstration Project: Technical Report (2011)

To help reduce the risk of deaths and serious injuries in Indonesia, iRAP was invited by AusAID, through the Indonesia Infrastructure Initiative (IndII), and the Directorate General of Highways (DGH) to undertake a demonstration project.

Safer-Greener Highways Pilot, India (2010)

iRAP was invited by the World Bank Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF) to assist in developing a plan for the ‘safer’ component of the NHAI's Safer-Greener Highway Pilot project, which focuses on the section of National Highway 1 (NH-1) between the Delhi – Haryana Border and the southern end of the Panipat Toll Road.
